Planet Minigolf Review

Posted on 14 November 2010 by

Minigolf simulators are many and quite abundant nowadays, and it seems that for some reason few developers expect the playerbase of this type of game to be very demanding. We can see some very poorly-designed titles out there, some of them actually getting you to wonder how they passed quality testing in the first place. On the other hand, if you look around a bit, you can see some hidden gems like Planet Minigolf, which is not only packed full of quality hours of play, but also comes very cheaply as well.

Gameplay

Planet Minigolf comes with a lot of content, especially for a game of its class. Initially, you’ll go through a brief character customization process, allowing you to pick one of the several pre-set avatars and tweak them slightly to your needs. Afterwards, you can either play the game in a continuous campaign mode, or do some quick matches against other players online. There are several courses available, bringing the total number of holes up to 144, which should be more than enough to keep you occupied for quite a while.

The game allows you to customize your controlling scheme as well, instead of forcing you to use a specific system of launching the ball (as we all know, this can be quite tricky to handle in this type of games). There are three different control settings, and each has a potentially high skill ceiling – as high as a minigolf game can allow for, anyway – and even if you’re not satisfied with the one you’ve chosen, you can easily change it from the options menu later on. We advise you to give all three a try, as they’re each suited for different gamer types and you can never be sure if there isn’t one better for you.

Graphics and System Requirements

The graphics of the game border between realistic and artistic, with the characters designed in a clean fashion, though slightly disproportionate in a cartoony way in some spots. The environments are varied, and you’ll be taken all the way from a standard beach minigolf, through an ancient valley, and to a frozen arctic station. All of the environments look believable and unique, and each level lasts just long enough to keep you interested, and you’ll usually get to see the next environment just about the time you start getting bored of the current one.

Seeing as how the game has been exclusively developed for the PS3, you can expect its compatibility with its hardware to be top notch – and that includes the way the developers have utilized its potential, too. Even though it’s a minigolf simulator, it still offers some impressive visual effects from time to time.

Other

The game’s multiplayer, which we mentioned above, isn’t just a last-minute addition like most other minigolf games do it – instead, it’s a full-blown feature with an active community, so make sure you check it out!

Conclusion

Planet Minigolf can be a great game for killing time, or if you enjoy this type of game, it can even become your next favorite one for a while!
